This article explores the dramatic increase in the use of inter partes reexaminations to cancel the claims of a patent. The inter partes reexamination process, which has been available for more than a decade, had an unremarkable beginning with only five inter partes reexamination requests filed in the first three years since becoming law, but has since grown in popularity.
