First Intellectual Property Law Firm Recognized for Commitment to Diversity

NEW YORK (November 7, 2002) – Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper & Scinto, a Manhattan-based law firm, has been selected as the 2002 Thomas L. Sager Award winner for the Northeast Region by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association (“MCCA”). Fitzpatrick, Cella is the first intellectual property law firm ever to win the award.

Fitzpatrick, Cella has doubled its number of minority attorneys since 1998. Currently, over 20% of the firm’s attorneys are minorities. Within the past three years, 30% of new hires have been minorities and over 35% have been women, and 50% of the firm’s new partners have been women. The firm also enjoys a very high retention rate. In addition, over 5% of attorneys, including one first-year associate, work part-time, telecommute, or have schedules that are a combination of the two. All associates, including summer associates, are given the opportunity to work on pro bono projects and are given full credit for this time.

“In our experience, people from different backgrounds bring a rich diversity of unique talents, perspectives and abilities that enable us to offer our clients the highest level of quality intellectual property legal services,” said Fitzpatrick, Cella partner and Management Committee member Robert L. Baechtold.

The award, named in honor of MCCA Board of Directors Member and DuPont Vice President & Assistant General Counsel, Thomas L. Sager, is given annually to law firms and companies that demonstrate sustained commitment to improving the hiring, retention and promotion of minority and women attorneys.
